How did you become involved in training and competition?
I became involved in training in oct 1996 for gkr as I wanted to follow in my dads foot steps as for the competitions we became involved when gkr fist started doing them in the uk and have been involved ever since.
when and why did you first take up karate ?
oct 1996 because I had heard my dad talking about it and wanted to do it and threw watching karate kid
The NAS circuit is a lot tougher than a lot of people realise. How do you prepare yourself for the kumite?
Every one has there own preparation and I am a firm believer that you have to fine what gets you in the zone and prepared not what others do mine personally is a good night out and lack of sleep and listening to Michael Jackson’s man in the mirror before bouts.
Where is a bout won and lost?
In your preparation before you even enter a ring , “fail to prepare prepare to fail”

Over all Ian Squires, (nas) Richard Canton
How has NAS influenced you in the martial arts?
It has made me more aware of different style or martial arts and helped me adapt in my kumite
What is the best thing about martial arts?
Its gives you a confidence that you can defend yourself if you are ever unfortunate enough to be in a situation where you may need to.
How do you develop the kind of mental discipline needed for competition?
Threw training and personal desire
How has your training background prepared you for competition?
I have done tournaments since I was about 9 so it has given me great confidence to go on and strive for the best
How do you deal with your inner critic?
Win
How do the lessons of Karate apply to day-to-day life?
Gives you self confidence to try things and get back up when you have been knocked down
How has karate affected your life?
Helped me become the confidant fearless man I am today
Who has influenced you in the martial arts? How have they influenced you?
My family, Robert Sullivan, Stacey karetsian. showed me that if you have a vision let nobody and nothing get in the way of achieving your goals
Can you describe your recent experience of winning the NAS champion of champions?
A roller coaster ride with ups that way out way the downs was a truly immense competition
What is your favourite aspect of competition?
The winning
What are your career highlights?
Gkr national junior open male champion 2004(undisputed), gkr national open male champion 2006 (undisputed) & nas champion of champions 2009
How do you prepare for the competition?
1 hour per day in the gym training twice a week, night in with carling & a 5hour drive from Manchester to burgess hill. Training Monday normal class then 1 hour tournament training Wednesday 1 hour tournament training 1 hour every day in the gym
What effect do your teammates have on your training and performance?
A massive effect you are only as good as the people who train you
How important is mental preparation? How do you prepare your mind for the competition?
The most important “if you think you cant win you wont if you think you can win your half way there.”
How can martial arts be used to improve your daily life?
In many aspects it helps you asses situations better give you bags of confidence and many other points
What are your goals for the future?
Retaining my champ of champs title go a full year of nas unbeaten

Gkr junior title 2004 gkr senior title 2006 champ of champs 2009
Which elements of your art does NAS test and develop most, and are there any areas that aren’t fully developed or tested through NAS comp?
all of them are tested some to greater lengths than others but is is a great comp for testing all your skills
What made you choose the style you’re in, and have you ever tried any other styles?
Was the best around yes I have tried a few other styles and would like to try more
Why should others want to get involved in NAS?
Because it is a immense tournament well organised and good opponents
