NAS UK Cocks Moor Woods Round 1 - 22nd July 2007

Picture this…. Most of the West Midlands dark grey and very, very wet!!! A large chunk of the area looking like paddy fields from the sky, a fitting setting to NAS, or maybe not…

I would like to extend the biggest thank you to every single one of you that made it to the tournament, from competitors to spectators to officials. In the face of adversity and natural disasters the NAS came out proud. With over 50 competitors absent due to the weather and many of them attempting to make the journey but to no avail, and a large contingent of our officials stranded in their homes. This left our competitor base quite depleated, we had to completely re-organise and restructure the event. All competitors and spectators showed their true metal and kept true to the NAS ethos of good spirit, good will and appreciation, and against all odds the day ran superbly well. By round 2 in October we shall have a heatwave!!!

All officials and our technical director and administration did an amazingly professional job in re-organising quickly and efficiently.

We had a far bigger quantity of Kung Fu namely Lau Gar and one of their big characters Jim Greene (with an ‘e’) and MPT kickboxing at this tournament of whose talent and attitude was amazing, 2 major clubs travelling up from the South East circuit, couldn’t make it through the floods to get here. However, Mark White’s club Falcons kickboxing did and should be very proud as his team took plenty of trophies back home. Lau gar kung fu, were as fascinating as ever, and as usual Go Kan Ryu karate sent in the full squad and scooped their rewards.

Kyle Greaves of Go Kan Ryu stood victorious in the 12-14 Male Continuous. Katie Wragg & Joanna Illingworth both from Falcons took 1st & 2nd in female sparring intermediate (Joanna having moved up on the day from the novice section) with Pauline Page of Go Kan Ryu a very close 3rd.

Young Elliott Thiemann (10yrs) of Birmingham & Halsowen Shotokan Karate amazed the crowd with his flexibility, somersaults and use of weapon in the creative forms division.

Paul Clements of Lau Gar scooped both the Open Male form and Senior Weapons division.

The atmosphere in Birmingham has always been a welcoming one, and this was no exception. Another great tournament in the face of adversity with the floods, a phenomenally high standard of Martial arts and the NAS etiquette throughout, which helps to set this circuit apart, a true appreciation of all styles.

Angela Kay the first UKNAS Champions of Champions made it to the tournament and proceeded to take the Black Belt Opens sparring crown. Kym Power seems to be a name to look out for as she either placed or won every division she entered. Warriors MMA competitor Toan Vuong also moved up a division to intermediate and came third.

Christopher Stringer won his 15-17yrs continuous division and Mark Zikking won the novice sparring, both of MPT kickboxing. A great start to their first tournament.

Round 2 is on 28 th October at Cocks Moor Woods Leisure Centre. Play your part in the UKNAS journey, it truly is something special.
